  Abstract

Background: People have all had times when we are having so much fun, and those times seem to pass very quickly. Then there are times when we are really bored, when time feels like it is crawling. Many people wish time would feel the same in every situation. Scientists wanted to know why time in our brain does not always match the actual clock.

Objective: Researchers wanted to understand why time feels like it moves faster when we are enjoying something and slower when we are bored.

Method: Instead of placing people in different rooms, researchers studied how the brain processes attention, memory, and dopamine levels. They examined previous experiments and brain studies to understand how engaging activities affect time perception. They focused on how the brain records memories during exciting or novel experiences.

Results: The studies showed that when people are having fun or are highly engaged, their brains focus more on the activity itself rather than tracking time. Fewer detailed time memories are formed during the experience, which makes it feel shorter in the moment. In contrast, when people are bored, they pay more attention to the passage of time, which makes it feel slower. Scientists also found that dopamine, a brain chemical linked to reward and pleasure, plays a role in how we experience time.

Conclusion: Time does not actually change, but our perception of it does. When we are engaged and enjoying something, our brain processes time differently, making it seem to pass more quickly. Understanding this may help people become more aware of how their brain influences their sense of time.
