Abstract
Background:
Zebra Finches are commonly used for studies because how males learn mating songs is similar to humans' development of speech. They are very talkative birds and have various vocalizations.
Objective:
Biologists wondered if birds were able to distinguish different call types and react to them, rather than simply acting on hard-wired instincts.
Method:
Researchers mimicked natural conditions in the lab to catalog the calls of captive Zebra Finches, then separated them into 11 different vocalizations to analyze the acoustics - pitch, timbre, and rhythm. They recorded the corresponding behavior to form an ethogram to associate different calls with certain behaviors. Next, they designed an experiment in which the Zebra Finches pecked a button to skip through a shuffled playlist of several hundred calls, continuing until they reached the one call type that earned a reward of seeds. The recordings were drawn from a library of about 8,000 calls from over 30 different finches.
Results:
They found that the Zebra Finches occasionally confused two contact calls: a close-distance "tet" sound to follow each other's location, and a "pitchiou" or honk to signal over long distances. However, they did not confuse the alarm call ("thuk") with the close-distance call, even though those two are similar in sound. Shockingly, they made mistakes based on the semantics of the call types even more often than on the acoustics. This proves that Zebra Finches are able to extract meaning from each call, thereby distinguishing different call types.
Conclusion:
Zebra Finches are not very high in intelligence, meaning other birds such as crows, which have much more complex vocalizations, probably have much more elaborate perceptual landscapes. Overall, this study has improved our understanding of behavior and evolution, increasing our environmental awareness.
